Dalindèo live with fresh tunes at Jazz Heat Bongo Beat, Kuudes Linja Helsinki, May 16
After a show-stopping excursion to Kulttuuritalo w/ Mulatu Astatke, Nicola Conte et al, the Ricky-Tick club night Jazz Heat Bongo Beat returns to the cosy club Kuudes Linja in Helsinki this saturday, May 16. Live on stage, Dalindèo rip through a set of fresh material from their soon-to-be-here EP, plus upcoming full-lenght due out in fall. DJ kicks are provided by Timo Lassy, making a rare appearance behind the Technics, and Matti Nives.
Dalindèo are much loved for their breezy brand of Brasilian-tinged dancefloor jazz evident on the debut "Open Scenes" and the accompanying twelve-inch releases. This time around, though, the band moves towards a more hard-headed groove. Cinematic soundscpaes are abound in the diverse sound of Dalindèo circa 2009. Live on stage, the energy that makes the band stand out is still there, as is a new-found savvy in the challenging field of jazz composition.
Kicking things off and keeping the heat into the wee hours of the unavoidable Sunday morning are DJs Timo Lassy and Matti Nives. Dancing shoes stay on until 4 am. If you're into proper dancefloor jazz goodness, that is.

RT031 Dalindèo: "Vintage Voyage"
|
|
Dalindèo introduces a new cinematic sound on "Vintage Voyage"
"Vintage Voyage" is the title of the new Dalindèo release, out very shortly (in May). Dalindèo leader Valtteri Pöyhönen sees the band moving away from their early "Brazilica" influences into a world of sound with increasingly visual connotations.
The new EP introduces a more hard-driving, perhaps a bit more "live" sound for the band than that heard on the previous releases. The A-side, 'Willpower', is a dreamy and spiritual vocal jazz piece featuring the voice and lyrics of Berlin-based vocalist Bajka. "What I really love about that tune is the intensity of Bajka's vocals", Valtteri explains. "She's the kind of vocalist that when she's on, you best keep the tape rolling at all times".
Another thing Valtteri mentions about the collabo is how Bajka's thinking altered the process of composition. "She introduced the chorus melody just completely out of the blue. It blew me away in it's originality".
The instrumentals 'Vintage Voyage' and 'Mr. J.L.' sport an abundance of punch on their own right. "'Vintage Voyage', for example, is a track with a distinct big band feel to it", the composer says. Ellington and Mingus rank among Pöyhönen's inspiration, yet there is something distinctively 21st cenury in the mix. "I wanted to use the woodwinds rather extensively to give the tunes an orchestral feel not often heard in this kinda setting", Valtteri states.
'Mr. J.L.' of course is drummer Jaska Lukkarinen, blasting away as vigorously as ever on the new EP. "The strong presence of rhythm section is very important for me when thinking about the new tunes", Pöyhönen adds. "Having a star drummer like Jaska on board couldn't hurt, could it?".
The EP "Vintage Voyage" and the following full-lenght "Soundtrack for the Sound Eye" display a strong cinematic atmosphere, as stated earlier. They find both Dalindèo and Valtteri Pöyhönen step up onto level two, where their mission is to keep the original spirit of jazz alive. "We want to ephasize our key characteristics: danceable rhythms, strong melodies, and the craftmanship of the Dalindèo line up which is now tighter than ever thanks to extensive gigging."
Dalindèo performs live at Jazz Heat Bongo Beat at Kuudes Linja in Helsinki on May 16. "Vintage Voyage" EP (RT031) is out soon on Ricky-Tick Records with the full-lenght album release planned for the fall of 2009.

Format: 12" vinyl
Get ready for trumpet player Jukka Eskola's stunning return with his new double A-sider entitled "Jova / Chip 'n' Charge" and the full-lenght "Walkover", which will follow in May.
The upcoming offering finds Eskola in moods not unlike those championed by the famed label CTi some decades ago. That being said, this is jazz in the present tense with a distinctively fresh angle, and it seems that the single along with the following longplayer will be one of the biggies this year. The single will be out very shortly and the album release is set for May 13.
